It’s the first lightsaber fight we see in the Star Wars saga, and one of A New Hope’s most defining moments. Yes, we’re talking about the famous duel between Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Vader on board the Death Star. Although it remains an iconic sequence, starting with The Empire Strikes Back the lightsaber duels got a lot more choreographed and complicated. It almost makes this one from the original film seem quaint. Especially when compared to the Star Wars films of the 21st century.
But now, one Star Wars diehard named FXitinPost has created an incredibly well produced fan film that shows us how that iconic duel would play out in a modern movie. The nearly seven minute video is titled Star Wars SC 38 Reimagined, referring to A New Hope’s 38th scene. Although it incorporates footage from the original film, FXitinPost redid almost the entire actual fight scene from scratch. You can watch the video in its entirety above.
According to the official description, “Scene 38 Reimagined is about the final confrontation between Ben Kenobi & Darth Vader in A New Hope nearly 20 years after the events of Revenge Of The Sith. This is a one-off, story-driven scene reflecting the characters in its chronological order from the point of Revenge of the Sith through Rebels, Rogue One, and all canon material leading to A New Hope.”
Obi-Wan and Vader fight much more in the style of the prequels and sequels here. Both opponents use all their Jedi and Sith powers against each other. It comes across a lot less like just two guys fencing with glow sticks. In addition, music from Revenge of the Sith is used. This reinforces that this is their first encounter since their fateful duel on Mustafar decades earlier. I’d never want the original fight replaced, but this is a very cool exercise in “what if?”
