Sure – you go to the range, pop off a bunch of rounds and call it a day. Well, that’s good, but when it comes to using a firearm for self defense…you’re only getting started.
Now if every attacker stood 3 to 10 yards in front of you and waited for you to shoot them – you’d be all set. Unfortunately it doesn’t work like that in the real world.
Criminals are cunning and will size you up and pick a time to attack when they think they will be most successful.
For example, you could be easily distracted by a primary threat, when a larger, secondary threat comes behind you and body grabs you to control you.
Below is a weapon retention tactic from the Guardian Weapon Retention Program that deals specifically with this assault from the rear.
A gun is not enough. It’s a tool, just like any other.
Assaults don’t happen in a vacuum and the decision to use JUSTIFIED deadly force needs to not only meet the criteria of intent and ability – but you might have to prove that in court.
So when I see people posting “I’d just shoot him” when the discussion of self defense comes up — well you’re not giving real violence and the value of life the respect it deserves.
We teach the Guardian Weapon Retention Program to law enforcement, military and civilians.
We make this program available to the public because anyone who owns a firearm, should know this.
